The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, again tested positive for the coronavirus almost a year after a first asymptomatic infection, his press department reported Thursday.

Paes woke up this morning “with mild flu symptoms, a sore throat and underwent a rapid examination” that confirmed the infection, according to the statement.

“In May 2020, the mayor had already tested positive and remained asymptomatic throughout the quarantine period”, added his team.

Paes, 51, has not yet been vaccinated and will remain in isolation.

Like the rest of the country, the city of Rio is vaccinating people by age group and has not yet completed the immunization of those over 60.

The state of Rio de Janeiro, with 17 million inhabitants, accumulates 40,000 deaths, 300 in the last 24 hours.

In proportion, it is among the five most affected states in the country, with a rate of 232 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to a national figure of 172.

Brazil, with 212 million inhabitants, surpassed 360,000 deaths from coronavirus this Wednesday and continues to be the second country with the highest absolute number of deaths, behind the United States (564,400).
