Constantine, released in 2005 and based on the comic of the same name, came before the whole world went crazy for comic book movies. However, the Keanu Reeves film has garnered a slow and steady cult following over the years, and one of its biggest supporters was Reeves himself. El actor ha hablado en numerosas ocasiones de cómo le gustaría hacer una Constantine 2. Eso por no mencionar que Warner Bros. Is desperate to add more content to comics in order to create a series of films from DC de éxito, of which Constantine is a part. This begs the question of whether there’s a Constantine sequel in the works or if the movie franchise just died.

The development of Constantine Sequel has been a long road

Since the premiere of the first film, there has been talk of a sequel. However, the movie seemed pretty dead for over a decade, despite the rise in popularity of superhero movies thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As time passed and more comic book movies came out, fans of the film began to wonder why Reeves wasn’t asked to reprise the role, especially after John Wick re-dedicated to him as an action star.

Of course, Constantine wasn’t quite dead during this time. NBC launched a television series based on the character and starring Matt Ryan, which ran for one season before being canceled. Ryan reprized the character in Arrow and other Arrowverse series. Constantine was also going to appear in JJ Abrams’ now defunct Justice League Dark. However, when the TV version of Constantine failed to come true and disappeared, things turned sour for the anti-hero.

In September 2022, that all changed when it was announced that WB had returned to the character and teamed up with Reeves to do a sequel after languishing for 17 years. The film is written by Akiva Goldsman and produced by JJ Abrams and Hannah Minghella. They even bring the director of the first film, Francis Lawrence, back behind the camera. This means the sequel to Constantine is officially underway.

However, a lot has happened after September 2022 with DC Films. DC Studios is now led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are looking to do a semi-hard reboot across the entire line of films. The couple recently announced their plans for the future of DC movies, laying the groundwork for their new, interconnected film and TV universe. During the announcement, Gunn also mentioned a number of Old Regime movies that were still in the works, but he didn’t mention Constantine 2. This made people wonder if the movie would ever to go out. This had people wondering if the movie was still in the works now that the couple had cleaned up the house and sparked rumors online that it was no longer in the works.

However, as of February 2023, the film is still in production. The WB has confirmed the film hasn’t been ruled out, but it’s unclear where it will fit into Gunn and Safran’s plans. It’s not mentioned in the first “chapter” of the movies they plotted, although there is a Swamp Thing movie, and both characters belong to the darker side of DC comics. It’s also possible that Constantine 2 is part of DC’s Elseworlds and exists outside of the rest of DC Studios content, much like Matt Reeves’ BatVerse and Joker movies. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what DC does with the movie.
