Gabriel Solano and Romina del Plá at the plenary session of the Partido Obrero where their candidacies were proclaimed

“The magnitude of the economic and social crisis calls for an independent left to rise up.” with these words, Gabriel Solano, The Buenos Aires lawmaker, leader of the Partido Obrero, today agreed to be the force’s pre-presidential candidate, in a formula with Romina del Plan, in a plenary session with 2,500 delegates from across the country. Space, which is part of the Left Unity Front, also announced this afternoon the candidacies of Nestor Pitrola Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires and Vanina Biasi at the town hall.

The meeting, attended by representatives of the union, piquetero, youth, environment, housing and cultural movements, among others, was held in the micro-stadium of Lanús, a town in the suburbs of Buenos Aires run by the PRO of Néstor Grindetti. There, a political document was voted in which the main forces of the ruling party and the opposition were harshly questioned; “the tasks of the workers and of the left” have been established; and the nominations of the PO for the lists of the Left Front are proclaimed.

“Argentina is going through a background crisis, for which all the political forces that have governed the country are responsible. The Alberto Fernández, the Macri, Larreta, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner led to more than 50% of our boys and girls live in poverty, that retirees have assets neediness and that the job insecurity reach half of the workers. 40 years after the return of democracy and more than 20 after the 2001 crisis, the need to throw out all the capitalist politicians and fight for a left-wing and working-class government,” the candidate said.

The proposal of the Solano-Del Pla formula questions the national government in general for the agreement with the IMF which, they say, “aggravates the social crisis”. “Peronism has become the transmission belt of International Monetary Fund policy. Because of this, he faces the possibility of an electoral debacle, which he is already anticipating due to Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s resignation from the candidacy and Massa’s resistance to taking on this responsibility. There is a need to set up a popular movement with socialist banners which definitively defeats Peronism”, launches Solano.

It also sent a harsh message to the rest of the front itself, which is also made up of the Socialist Left, the Socialist Workers’ Movement (MST) and the Socialist Workers’ Party (PTS). The latter had already proposed the Myriam Bregman-Alejandro Vilca formula for the Nation a year ago. Solano expressed concern about the rise in the polls of the right, which combines both Avanza Libertad and the hard wing of Together for Change.

“This great crisis challenges the left, above all because there is a danger that the enormous and justified popular discontent be channeled by a reactionary right like Milei, Espert or Patricia Bullrich. This is why we need a left that stands up, fights, fights, that is independent from the politicians of the system, not a light left that is content to get one more parliamentary seat” , did he declare.

In this sense, he again requested that a FIT Open Congress, in order to “discuss a left that expresses the deepest aspirations and struggles of those who are exploited and wronged by this system”. Reluctant for applications to be defined in the STEP, Solano demanded that the coalition be “absolutely independent” from the majority alliances, to “promote the struggles that are coming and to debate and organize participation in the electoral campaign, defining the program and the candidates”.
