Spider-Man Noir joins Sony’s expanding Spider-Verse as a new series based on the fearless character hits Amazon. Details are scarce at this time, but Variety reports that the series is set at the same time of the Great Depression as the comic book.

A key difference is that Peter Parker will not be the hero. This mantle will be taken by an as-yet-unreleased “older and grizzled” character. In the comics, Spider-Man Noir is more brutal than most versions of the character, leading him to question the morality of his actions.

It’s not yet known when the series will air or who else might appear. Moviegoers probably know Spider-Man Noir best from his appearance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, where he was voiced by Nicolas Cage.

Detective Pikachu 2 and Mortal Kombat screenwriter Oren Uziel are preparing the scripts. Amy Pascal and Sony’s Into The Spider-Verse directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will serve as executive producers.

This Spider-Man Noir series is the second collaboration between Sony and Amazon for the franchise, with Silk: Spider Society being announced late last year. However, this is only part of Sony’s plans. In the cinematic realm, Kraven the Hunter will be released in October, El Muerto in January next year and Madame Web a month later. A third Venom movie is also in development, along with a Hypno-Hustler project starring Donald Glover.
