Alberto Fernández, president of Argentina, decreed three days of national mourning starting this Sunday after the death of former president Carlos Menem, according to a statement from the Casa Rosada.
Fernández had lamented the death of the ex-president with a message on his Twitter account and sent condolences to his family.
With deep regret I learned of the death of Carlos Saúl Menem. Always elected in a democracy, he was Governor of La Rioja, President of the Nation and National Senator. The former president of Argentina Mauricio Macri also spoke after Menem’s death. “He leaves us above all a good person, whom I will remember with great affection,” he said.

Another president of the region who spoke out on his networks was Sebastián Piñera, president of Chile, who described Menem as “a good friend of Chile.”
