This is the first batch of vaccines to arrive in Argentina through the Covax mechanism created by the World Health Organization to ensure an equitable distribution of biologics worldwide.
On a KLM airline flight, more than 200,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine against COVID-19 arrived in Argentina this Sunday, March 28. The biologics were sent through the Covax mechanism of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The first 218,000 doses of Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccines acquired by the Covax mechanism arrived in the country to continue the vaccination program against COVID-19,” the Argentine Ministry of Health published on its official Twitter account.
This is the first of several batches that will be sent by Covax to Argentina, which must total two million vaccines by the end of the first half of 2021.
This batch is part of the more than five million doses of biologics against the coronavirus that have arrived in the gaucho country from different pharmaceutical companies, including the 370,000 Sputnik V that arrived two days ago on a flight from Russia.
According to the Public Vaccination Monitor, until last Friday morning there were 4,197,945 vaccines already distributed in the national territory and 3,474,415, those applied to the population; while 2,824,344 people received the first dose and 650,071 have been injected with both.
Although the figures show that Argentina is on a good path in the execution of its vaccination plan, last week the Minister of Health, Carla Vizzotti, assured that there are great possibilities that the country will soon be immersed in a second wave of infections.
“In the region, in most of our neighboring countries there is an increase in cases (of coronavirus) quite rapidly,” explained the official, adding: “The borders in Argentina for foreigners are closed, tourism from countries has been closed. bordering on December 24, the land borders are also closed”, as a preventive measure to avoid the arrival of imported cases.
