In the upcoming Netflix film, Idris Elba will reprise his role as Detective John Luther in a new mystery.

An official logline for the film reads, “Brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther breaks out of prison to hunt down a sadistic serial killer terrorizing London.”
“We really peeled the onion here because we had the time and the scale to do it,” Elba told Empire last year of the film.
“It also gives [al creador] Neil [Cross] a lot more, you know, Luther-land to play in, in terms of where Luther can go, how he’s doing, what the scenery is.”
He adds: “We’ve gotten off the streets of London, we’ve gotten away from them a bit. And that’s great. It’s like we’re now entering a different life from the Luther experience.”
Earlier this year, Idris Elba said he thought he could be replaced as DCI John Luther in the Luther franchise.
“It’s not a competition, but I mean Bond as a role model for the kind of film we want,” he said.
“John is the protagonist of a film in which he is the hero. That’s the comparison I make. Some films are successful, Bond is one of them. But my ambition is for him to have this stature, this reverence.
“I want people to say, ‘Ooh! Luther, the first movie? Evil.’
The Fallen Sun hits theaters on February 24, before premiering on Netflix on March 10.
