“Shingeki no Kyojin” has many key elements that take his story from “good” to absolutely amazing. Yes, the controversy with an ending that was not very appreciated will always haunt Hajime Isayama’s work, but I think the same as ‘with “Game of Thrones”: the path to this conclusion has so many lights that it seems to me a crime to turn them all off for a light bulb that did not turn on. And yes, ‘El Rumbar’ seems to me one more of these geniuses of Isayama-sensei.
That said, and as you will understand upon entering this article, the idea is dissect to the limit all that is and represents ‘The Rumble’ of “Shingeki no Kyojin”. So if you’re more than ready for potential spoilers, here we go.
The Origin of Shingeki no Kyojin’s ‘The Rumble’
- The origin of The Rumble is in the great war between Eldia and Marley which takes place before the start of the anime and manga Shingeki no Kyojin, but whose aftermath ends up triggering all the events seen afterward.
- That’s how it all starts with the King of Eldia ‘Karl Fritz’, who gathered what was left of the Eldian Empire on the Isle of Paradise, which he fortified by creating the walls of ‘Maria’, ‘Rose’ and ‘Sheena’, all with the names of the daughters of Ymir Fritz, the first of the line with the ability to transform into a Titan. These walls were actually created with gigantic titans who, at the command of the Founding Titan, could leave this position of “safety” at any time and begin to roam the world as weapons of mass destruction.
- King Karl Fritz’s actions stem from the belief that the Eldians had used the power of the Titans for too long to commit heinous acts. For this reason, despite the fact that on arriving in Paradise this Threat that anyone who came to attack them would be slaughtered by the gigantic titans on the walls, the truth is that Karl Fritz would have left Eldia to be completely destroyed, believing it was the fate that all his sins had created. This allowed a false sense of security to exist for decades in a cold war destined to erupt again, as later members of the bloodline remained under the influence of this vow of “peace”.
- How did this “peace” that had been achieved by the threat of The Rumble end up being destroyed? Well, because of the influence of Eren Jaeger.
The threat of The Rumble in motion
- He attack the titans He is one of the 9 most unique titans introduced to us in Shingeki no Kyojin, basically because he has a really special power: can connect to past and future titan holders.
- What does this have to do with The Rumble? Well, when Grisha Jäger It’s done with the power of the Attack Titan, it sees how Eren will be tasked with unleashing the power of The Rumble in a future.
- As a consequence of this, Grisha Jaeger is influenced by the will of future Eren, which leads him to “steal” the power of the Founding Titan devouring and slaughtering the Reiss family.
- Eren himself experiences a similar “awakening” to his father’s a few years later. During a commemoration ceremony for the survivors of Shiganshina, Eren comes into contact with Historia, who has royal blood., and it directly sends him visions of his future in which he sees how he will be tasked with activating The Rumble. This is how the wheel of fate is set in motion with no possibility of being stopped for Eren, although without royal blood to activate the Founding Titan, he is obviously forced to come up with a plan.
The Rumble, unleashed
- Using the Founding Titan’s power is not as simple as absorbing its possessor, but requires two conditions to be met: that Ymir Fritz is willing to lend his power and either have royal blood or come into contact with someone who does. Important detail: Ymir Fritz is the first Titan of all and as such the original Founding Titan from which the 9 Titans later emerged, so convincing Ymir’s ever-present will is key until The Rumble goes wild.
- This is how the two visions of Eren and Zeke Jaeger: the first is clear about what he wants release the rumblewhile the second wants use Ymir Fritz’s Founding Titan powers to “sterilize” the population of Eldia and end a bloodline that has left an unprecedented bloodstain on humanity.
- When Eren and Zeke made contact, which had always been the former’s purpose, the latter’s royal blood allowed Eren to see that Ymir Fritz was actually willing to carry out the sterilization plan, since the love for his father and therefore all his blood was such that he did not care to face such a fate. However, Eren ended up convincing her that she shouldn’t be forced into something so cruel and that she was fully entitled to unleash her true will..
- Like, Ymir Fritz agreed to hand over the powers of the Founding Titan to Eren, who then freed the Titans from the walls to begin unprecedented destruction across the world.. The result of triggering the Rumble was as follows (even though it eventually stopped):
- the continent of Marley was completely destroyed.
- The southern continent suffered devastating damage.
- Many other countries also suffered severe damage.
- In total, it is estimated that around 80% of human life was completely extinguished as a result of The Rumbling.
Without a doubt, The Rumble is the most catastrophic event of all “Shingeki no Kyojin” and surely of anything seen in anime and manga history. I think the closest thing I’ve seen to something like this is “The Eclipse” from “Berserk”, more than because of the destruction it unleashes (which ultimately in the latter is ultimately not that much), because of this feeling of “false apocalypse” created by an incredibly strong will. For all that, if you have any questions with ‘El Retumbar’ after all that, feel free to ask in the comments section!
