MEXICO CITY (AP) — The tortured bodies of four city workers were found in a vehicle Saturday in the resort town of Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, state authorities said.

The discovery was confirmed by the Quintana Roo state attorney general’s office, which said in a statement that the bodies were found in the municipality of Solidaridad.

Later, local officials confirmed that they were municipal inspectors, noting that the bodies showed signs of torture. Local media said they were inside a municipal traffic patrol.

In recent months, Playa del Carmen, one of the tourist gems of the Mexican Caribbean, has been rocked by several acts of violence in which foreigners have been implicated.
