Many artists have weighed in on Steve Albini’s comments about Steely Dan.
Earlier this week (February 6), the producer/engineer took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the New York rock band: “I’ll always be the kind of punk that shits on Steely Dan.
“God, the amount of human effort wasted to sound like an SNL group warmup.”
Albini then appeared to post arguments in favor of Steely Dan before offering his rebuttals, including the suggestion that they “spent three weeks on the guitar solo”.
His comments prompted many musicians to join the debate, with some artists, including Jenny Lewis and St. Vincent, endorsing Steely Dan.
“Love Steely Dan,” the former wrote, and the latter added, “For the record – I FUCK LOVE STEELY DAN.”
Actor Ben Stiller also endorsed Lewis’ comment, writing, “Me too,” as did Small Black Music, who said, “Looks like we’re unlikely allies in the Dan wars @jennydianelewis!”
But several musicians, including Jason Isbell, supported Albini’s comments.
“My wife hates Steely Dan so much she’s starting a fan group called the Albini Babies,” Isbell wrote, prompting Albini to say, “Sir, please pass on to your kind lady the most appropriate compliment from me. is a good woman. And now I’m going to leave you alone.”
Unknown Mortal Orchestra, for its part, declared itself a fan of Albini and Steely Dan.
They wrote: “I’ve always been a ‘both’ guy.”
Steely Dan has yet to comment on Albini’s comments.
Albini previously lashed out at Ricky Gervais’ “fucking” special on Netflix, describing him as an “anti-trans revival” comedian.
In contrast, Albini paid tribute to Sweep The Leg Johnny frontman Steve Sostak, who died aged 49.
He said, “Good bands, nice guy. Played baseball and CMBA Red Sox with a bunch of other musicians, always had a good time there too. Requiescat.”
