Derived from the abuse and death of the medical intern, Mariana Sánchez Dávalos, Carlos F. Natarén Nandayapa, rector of the Autonomous University of Chiapas (UNACH), apologized on behalf of the institution for not having the measures to give security to the students.

Through a press release, UNACH expressed that it will assume an institutional commitment to eradicate any type of violence. And he added that the apologies they offered “given that in 47 years of institutional life, effective conditions of security and protection have not been generated for university students.”

“I want to offer a public apology for not having created effective security and protection conditions for university students who, in pursuit of their dreams, have been violated, attacked and made invisible. Today, our commitment and conviction is to eradicate cultural violence against women, stating that there will be zero tolerance towards the members of our community.” Natarén Nandayapa stressed in a public ceremony.

After recognizing, in front of members of the Network of University Feminist Collectives of the UNACH, of the Governing Board, academics and managers, that the complaint system has been obsolete, the rector explained that he proposed a reform for the care of victims.

The actions were derived from the case of Mariana Sánchez Dávalos.

Mariana Sánchez Dávalos was a woman who graduated from the UNACH Faculty of Medicine. At the time of her death, she was performing her social service at the Nueva Palestina clinic. Two months before the discovery of her body, she had reported an attack of sexual abuse by one of the members of the community.

However, the complaint was not followed up. Behind them requested support from the authorities of the National Autonomous University of Chiapas and the local Ministry of Health, in charge of her internship so that she could be changed clinics and could continue her activities without being sexually harassed.

The solution of the latter was send her a month of vacation, without receiving a scholarship, without solving the problem, and even threatening her that her documents would not be released if she didn’t finish her social service.

As if that were not enough, the authorities presumed that her death had been a suicide despite the fact that her body, found on January 28, had signs of hanging and violence, as they denied the existence of these.

“The coroner reported that the body did not show signs of violence or sexual assault. The Public Ministry exhausts the procedures for the femicide protocol.” Informed the Prosecutor’s Office.
