After the shooting at the Hyatt hotel in Cancun that left two dead, the executive president of the Association of Vacation Clubs of Quintana Roo, Miriam Cortés Franco, requested the intervention of the federal government to generate security conditions for residents and vacationers in the tourist destinations of her state.

The representative of the businessmen pointed out in an interview for El Economista that, without a doubt, the violent events that have hit the Riviera Maya in recent weeks affect tourist activity, and therefore, the pockets of Quintana Roo residents.

“Because nobody goes on a trip with the idea of seeing what happens in terms of security. In tourism the most sensitive issue is safety and, of course, they affect. There have been many calls asking if the destination is safe and if the operators can send their travelers to the Mexican Caribbean.”

Cortés Franco stressed that the shootings in nightclubs and hotels are not isolated events, but neither is it something that is happening every day. And it is that she assured that for several years, society, businessmen and the government have done a lot of work to improve security in tourist corridors; However, more support from the federation is necessary, as these are events related to organized crime, which is difficult to combat only with the capacities of municipal and state authorities.

“At the moment, coordinated work is required between the three levels of government. Specifically, the support of the Army and the Navy is required.”

The representative recalled that four years ago the so-called military city was built, in order for federal forces to take root in the state and have health and education services, but in 2019 the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took them away to contain migrants at the southern border.

She explained that, at that time, important coordinated operations were carried out in Cancun and what happened was that the drug dealers jumped to Tulum and now, when operations are carried out there, they go to Riviera Maya and thus, they are jumping from one place to another.

“What happens is that tourist destinations are very attractive for this type of crime. For this reason, it is necessary to shield the entire state and for that the strongest support of the federal government is needed.”

She pointed out that the objective of the Association of Vacation Clubs of Quintana Roo is to send a message to travelers, both national and international, that in the destinations of the Mexican Caribbean they are working to make their vacations pleasant, complying with the protocols of health and we are restoring security in every way.
