A 27-year-old man and his 33-year-old lover have been sentenced to death for adultery in Iran, according to the reformist daily Shargh this Saturday (11/06/2021) , which cites the decision of the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, the deceived woman submitted videos of her husband and lover having sex to the police, before forgiving them. But the father demanded the death penalty for his son-in-law and his lover.

Shargh reports in its Saturday edition that the 26th chamber of the Iranian Supreme Court recently confirmed the sentence “based on the videos and their confessions.”

In Iran, adultery is punishable by death by stoning, according to article 104 of the Penal Code, but the judge can choose to hang people instead of stoning them. If the family of a victim grants clemency to a criminal sentenced to death, the sentence is not carried out.

According to the human rights NGO Amnesty International, Iran executed 246 people in 2020.
