Authorities are investigating a case of police abuse in Tulum, Mexico, which has unleashed strong criticism against local police after a woman allegedly died after being subdued on the floor by several officers.

In local media and social networks, the video of a woman lying on the floor circulated while she was immobilized by an officer of the Municipal Police of Quintana Roo and surrounded by three other uniformed men who witnessed the incident without doing anything.

The victim is seen handcuffed and restrained on the ground when one of the officers was kneeling on his back. The woman screams several times, until then she is immobile and without saying a word.

The victim lay motionless on the ground for several minutes. This case was compared by human rights organizations with that of George Floyd, the African American who died after being subjected by officers in Minnesota.

WHAT THE AUTHORITIES SAY

The Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the death of the woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, and reported that they are investigating her “tortured homicide.”

“Probably elements of the municipal police of that locality participated, prosecutors attached to this social representation activated the action protocols and started the investigation folder,” said the accusing entity in a statement.

The Prosecutor’s Office promised that there will be no impunity “for those who participated in the death of the victim and that the full force of the law will be acted upon to bring to court those who are accused of these acts and that hurt institutions and society.”

New cases are added every day in different states of the country.
