MEXICO.- In an armed confrontation in the municipality of Irapuato, in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, three alleged criminals and two police officers died, local authorities reported Monday.

“The Secretariat of Public Security of the State deeply regrets the death of the elements and expresses its solidarity with their families, whom it will accompany in all the necessary procedures,” said the State Government through a statement.

The events occurred at dawn this Monday when elements of the Guanajuato security forces were attacked with firearms while on patrol in Irapuato.

The state police immediately repelled the attack, leading to a confrontation that left two members of public security and three alleged criminals dead.

In addition, two other policemen were injured and were transferred to a nearby hospital for prompt attention.

The Public Security Forces of the State of Guanajuato seized two long weapons, three bulletproof vests with the legend of a criminal group and a gray armored truck.

“After the events occurred, the competent authority was given a hearing, also leaving the scene of the scene, the weapons, the vehicle and the insured objects at their disposal,” the local Public Security Secretariat reported.

Just last March 31 there was another confrontation, this one in the municipality of Silao, where five alleged criminals and a state policeman died.

The state of Guanajuato, with approximately 6.1 million inhabitants, since 2018 has become the most violent entity in Mexico.

In 2020 it added 4,490 victims of intentional homicide, although local authorities maintain that 92% of them had some connection with organized crime groups.

Mexico closed in 2020 with 34,515 victims of intentional homicide, a figure just lower than the 34,648 cases in 2019, considered the most violent year in the contemporary history of the country.
