Italian cycling is in mourning again after one of its promises, Giuseppe Milone, lost his life on the road after being run over by a truck near the Sicilian city of Messina.
The 17-year-old young cyclist, who was part of Vincenzo Nibali’s team, was hit by a truck while in the Gualtieri Sicaminò area. Despite the fact that medical teams moved a helicopter to transfer him, they could do nothing to save his life due to the serious injuries sustained.
Nibali himself, who these days is competing in the UAE Tour, thus lamented the news through his social networks.
“This morning (yesterday) I woke up to the tragic news of Giuseppe’s death. The only gesture I can do to remind him is to run the stage with a black bow on my arm to pay tribute to him one last time. Now is the time to silence, everything else does not matter. A very young broken life brings a huge burden of pain that leaves us speechless. A big hug to Giuseppe’s family. Rest in peace.”
Milone held the title of ‘King of Etna’ after having completed the six slopes of the colossal Sicilian volcano with a mountain bike in an adventure of 205 kilometers and more than 7,000 meters of elevation gain that he completed in 12 hours and 45 minutes.
“I am proud to have achieved it. I worked hard and only with effort can you overcome your limits,” said the young Italian promise after achieving this challenge, whose life was taken by the road.
