US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Colombia on October 20 to strengthen cooperation between the two countries, the South American country’s Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

The United States is Colombia’s main ally in the fight against drug trafficking and the main destination for its exports.

Blinken’s arrival will mark the first visit by a high-level US official to Colombia since President Joe Biden took office.

The confirmation of the visit came after the meeting held in Paris days ago by the Foreign Minister of Colombia, Marta Lucía Ramírez and Blinken, during the ministerial meeting of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

“During the meeting, the foreign ministers will have the opportunity to strengthen cooperation between both countries and address various issues on the bilateral agenda,” said a statement from the Colombian Foreign Ministry.

“The High Level Dialogue will strengthen cooperation efforts and will serve to take the relationship with the United States to a new level, focused much more on foreign investment in Colombia, strengthening trade, job creation, environmental improvement, equality gender issues, transparency and the post-pandemic economic reactivation,” he added.

During the meeting, senior officials from the two countries will discuss economic and social opportunities; education, culture and sports; environment, climate change and health; energy and infrastructure; democracy, human rights, security, fight against drug trafficking and rural development.
