The biggest union for federal workers in the US wants the government shutdown to stop now. This call puts heat on Democrats in Congress. Workers have gone without pay for weeks, and the union says it’s time to fix it.

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) leads over 700,000 people who work for the government. They sent a letter to leaders on both sides. It asks for a bill to pay everyone who missed checks. The shutdown started on October 1 after talks broke down on spending.

AFGE boss Everett Kelley said it’s unfair. “Our members keep the country running every day. They need pay now, not promises later,” he told reporters. The union wants a clean bill with no strings. This means full back pay for all affected workers, from park rangers to air traffic helpers.

This move adds pressure as talks drag on. Republicans want cuts to some programs, but Democrats say no to that. The shutdown has closed parks, slowed security checks, and hurt small businesses near bases. Over 2 million workers face the pinch.

One worker from Virginia shared her story. “I can’t buy food for my kids without that check. This isn’t just about money – it’s our lives,” she said at a rally. Many unions back her, but AFGE’s voice is the loudest.

Experts say this could push things forward. A top aide to House Speaker Mike Johnson noted the letter. “We hear them. But we need real changes to spending,” he said. On the other side, Senate leader Chuck Schumer called for unity. “No one wins in a shutdown. Let’s pass pay for heroes.”

The White House backs the workers too. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said: “The president fights for fair pay. We urge quick action.” But with midterms close, both parties watch votes.

This isn’t the first time. Past shutdowns cost billions and hurt trust. Now, with holidays near, families worry more. Will this letter break the logjam? Eyes stay on Capitol Hill for news. For now, workers wait and hope for relief soon.
