TOULOUSE, France (AP) — Toulouse proved deadly in transition, upsetting third-placed Rennes 3-1 on Sunday in the French league.

Rennes have lost three of their last four league matches to lose ground in the race to qualify for the Champions League, while Toulouse settle into mid-table.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a Rafael Ratao counterattack after goalkeeper Steve Mandanda cleared Fares Chaibi’s shot on the post.

A minute later, Toulouse capitalized on another loose ball from Arthur Theate to extend the lead thanks to a shot from Moroccan winger Zakaria Aboukhlal.

Dutch striker Thijs Dallinga made it 3-0 after 37 minutes and scored eight league goals.

Rennes scored a consolation goal in the 55th minute with an own goal from centre-back Anthony Rouault.

The day ends with the later encounters Lyon vs. Lens, Lille vs. Strasbourg, Montpellier vs. Brest, Reims vs. Troyes, Angers c. Auxerre and Nantes v. Lorient.

Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain saw their lead at the top reduced to five points after losing 3-1 to Monaco on Saturday.
