Mortal Kombat, the film that should normally see the light of day in American theaters and on HBO Max on April 23, aims to remain faithful to the work of Ed Boon and John Tobias. Simon McQuoid, the director of the film, has never ceased to support this point during these various interventions. Despite everything, some fans still point to the few freedoms that this feature film allows itself in live action, starting with the fate of Jax and the arrival of a brand new hero Cole Young.

Once again, Simon McQuoid, the director of the film Mortal Kombat, took advantage of an event organized for the press to clarify his point of view once again. The objective with this film is to satisfy everyone, while respecting the lore of the fighting game saga. Therefore, the goal is not to modify what is existing by removing such and such an idea, but to extend the universe already created by bringing for example a new hero: Cole Young. The latter – as we have already specified in a previous article – will gradually discover this universe consisting of the image of neophyte viewers, but will not change anything that has already been established.

With this movie, we really considered new fans, but we always felt that we could respect the early fans as well as the core material without alienating the newcomers. We’re not changing anything in a fundamental way to try to help new fans (get into the universe). (…) We actually wanted to offer it to new people rather than changing it to make it more accessible. Simon McQuoid, director of Mortal Kombat

It would also seem that the formula chosen by Simon McQuoid is already paying off, at least in Russia and Thailand. Indeed, the film available for a few hours only – since April 11 to be exact – has just exploded the scores. For its opening weekend, Mortal Kombat generates more than $ 6.1 million in Russian territory and at the same time becomes the most popular Hollywood film since the start of the pandemic in this region. Better, the feature film also explodes the previous records made by blockbusters released in 2017 and 2018, namely Logan and Jurassic World 2. In total, according to the figures reported by Deadline, the film, available in 17 countries (Thailand, Taiwan , Saudi Arabia) has already accumulated a total of $ 10.7 million.

As a reminder, the film still has no release date in our territory, but will be available on April 23 in American theaters and on HBO Max.
