Witnesses indicated that the woman is the mother of the attacker, identified as Eric Herrera, 23 years old

CALIFORNIA – A 23-year-old Hispanic man was arrested Tuesday after he stabbed a woman and her dog with a samurai-style sword in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Eric Herrera is charged with attempted murder for the attack around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Victoria Avenue.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the 43-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, is expected to recover from multiple stab wounds. It is not clear if the animal survived the attack.

Neighbors indicated that the victim is Herrera’s mother. A neighbor, identified as Josh Gordon, told the Los Angeles Times that he witnessed the woman cry out for her help and pleaded with the suspect not to attack her.

“I am your mother,” the woman allegedly said.

However, authorities have not confirmed the information. The Department would only say that a family feud was reported before the bloody attack.

Herrera walked down the middle of the street with the sword and was arrested by officers after they used a stun gun (Taser) as he did not want to drop the gun. Apparently, the young man was carrying more than one sword.

Images from the body camera of one of the officers shows the confrontation of the Hispanic with the uniformed men.

Agents responded to the scene after receiving multiple calls alerting the scene.

According to the aforementioned witness, Herrera did not seem to be lucid at the time of the attack.

“He was moving and walking slowly. My biggest concern was the woman’s safety. There was a real sense of helplessness seeing what was happening from the other side of the road,” he described.

It is unclear if Gordon was one of the people who called police.
