At least 12 people died after a car accident Tuesday morning in Imperial, California, California Highway Patrol (CHP) agent Arturo Platero told Citizen Free Press.

A vehicle was traveling westbound on Noorish Road near State Route 115 when it headed “directly” from a large truck traveling north on 115, Agent Platero said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Imperial County fire officials confirmed to Citizen Free Press that it was a multi-vehicle car accident.

Juan Robledo, the department’s battalion chief, said the accident was located at the intersection of Highway 115 and Norrish Rd and that several agencies were responding to the event.
