The Los Angeles Police Department’s Southwest Station lobby will be closed for a while and some staff will be relocated after an arson attack last week, Police Chief Michel Moore said Tuesday.
Mishauna Eaton, 30, was arrested on Friday morning and convicted of arson. She was being held on $250,000 bond. Eaton remains in custody, Moore added.
Eaton reportedly pushed a burning shopping cart into the station concourse at the 1500 block of West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard around 11:25 p.m. Thursday.
The flames caused more than $1 million in damage to the front and interior of the station, Moore said.
No injuries were reported.
“Based on the video evidence that has been collected, it appears that she set a car on fire with combustibles inside,” Moore said at Tuesday’s Police Commission meeting.
The Los Angeles Police Department on Tuesday sought City Council approval to acquire a four-legged robot that resembles a dog despite criticism that it would further erode trust between police and communities of color. .
“The firefighters intervened and were able to put out the fire in about half an hour,” he added.
Detectives and agents will continue to work out of the station while repairs are carried out in the lobby.
“Community members who wish to meet a Detective Officer in person can go to any local station,” police said in a statement released last week.
