DC Comics made a series of announcements during the Retailer Summit BDPro which started today and will end on February 25. Among them is an event that was previously announced, though not directly, when Dawn of DC was originally announced.

Knight Terrors is the publisher’s summer event series. It comes from the author of DC’s latest event, Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, Joshua Williamson, and features art by Howard Porter, Guillem March, and others. Along with a two-issue miniseries series in July and August, the event will pit DCU heroes against their worst fears.

Here’s how DC describes Knight Terrors:

Knight Terrors is a miniseries that begins in July, in which Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman find the corpse of one of their first enemies in the Hall of Justice. Their investigation takes them beyond the land of the living, beyond the land of the dead, into a realm of nightmares. The only way to save the world is to enlist the help of an unlikely hero, Deadman.

The horror-focused event will pick up on DC’s editorial line in July and August and will feature several yet-to-be-announced two-issue miniseries from superstar creative teams. Each of the miniseries will feature a DC Super Hero or Super Villain facing their worst nightmares in a “Realm of Nightmare”. Superheroes better be careful, because what happens to them in the Nightmare Realm will also reflect in the waking world.

Ahead of the announced event kicking off in July, Williamson and Porter’s team will be joined by Chris Bachalo, his first job for DC Comics since 2002 (since he had worked for Marvel with Dr. Strange among other characters), to the special of the Free Comics Day (FCBD) The dawn of DC Knight Terrors.

As DC describes the prelude story:

“After a long night fighting crime with his father, Batman, Damian Wayne sleeps. But horrors invade their teenage dreams. Damian has seen a lot, but there is something different about this nightmare.

The new event is ideal for Williamson. The writer has directed several horror series, such as Nailbiter with Mike Henderson, Dark Ride with Andrei Bressan and Ghosted with Goran Sudzuka. In a statement accompanying the announcement, Williamson describes the genesis of the event:

“I love horror comics and it’s been a pleasure to bring that energy to Dawn of DC. Knight Terrors shows the terrifying side of our heroes as a new villain confronts them with their worst nightmares,” said Joshua Williamson. “It’s a fun and terrifying event that brings together all of DC’s heroes and villains, plus a few surprises!”

With this event, we see DC repeating the formula it used in another mega event of 2015: Convergence. At that time, the idea for Convergence was to show different creative teams, playing different characters, but all under the same storyline, but in a format of just two issues. At that time, the formula was being used to fix the disaster the New 52 series meant for DC.

Although today’s DC isn’t as shaky as it was at the end of the New 52, there’s something very similar and that’s that the usual heroes aren’t around and that didn’t a lot of good to the scenarios we’ve seen lately. . Will they use this event and this format as a way to bring back old superheroes to “merge” them with new ones and reinvigorate the stories?
