Mexico.- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and that of the United States, Joe Biden, will hold a virtual meeting next Monday to discuss “the vision and shared objectives of the bilateral agenda,” the Ministry of Foreign Relations reported this Friday. Mexican.

López Obrador, with a very close relationship with former President Donald Trump, was one of the last leaders to congratulate Biden on his November electoral victory, a triumph for which he finally congratulated him by letter.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expanded the information with a statement in which it explained that the leaders “will address cooperation mechanisms to address the structural causes of migration in northern Central America and southern Mexico.”

For its part, the US Executive issued a press release minutes later in which it confirmed migration and the economy as the main points to be discussed at the meeting.

López Obrador, who allowed Trump’s controversial immigration program “Remain in Mexico” (Remain in Mexico), raised to Biden in his congratulatory letter “promoting the development and well-being of the communities of southeastern Mexico and the countries of Central America ».

The Remain in Mexico program forces asylum seekers to be in Mexico awaiting appointments in US immigration courts, a process halted under the Trump administration.

Biden reopened as of February 19 the review of these cases of asylum seekers and there are already migrants crossing from the Mexican cities of Tijuana, Matamoros and Ciudad Juárez.

“In addition, the presidents will discuss the ravages of covid-19 and the areas of opportunity presented by the T-MEC (trade agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada) towards a sustainable and more egalitarian economic recovery in North America”, detailed the Government of Mexico.

The meeting, whose time has yet to be confirmed, will take place after the Secretary of State of the United States, Anthony Blinken, held virtual meetings this Friday with Foreign Minister Ebrard and with the Mexican Minister of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier.

Both governments emphasized after meeting their commitments on both migration and economic recovery after the effects of covid-19.
