A team of rescuers found dozens of dogs on the verge of death and starvation living in what was called a “dog dump” in Lancaster.

Some of the puppies arrived safe and sound at their temporary homes in OfgMor Pets Dog Rescue a studio town.

A day earlier, the cubs, some pregnant but most with protruding rib cages, were living in the Lancaster wilderness trying to survive.

“I got a call that there was a property in Lancaster that was known as a dump – they were driving by and dumping dogs,” said Melissa Bacelar of Wagmor Pets Dog Rescue.

Bacelar says the man who lives on the property was overwhelmed by the number of dogs that arrived, counting at least 40 of them.

Many are pregnant, sick and some have even been found dead.

“We found a means of transport. We find places where the dogs can go. We collect donations. That’s the most important thing,” Bacelar said.

They managed to save 10 puppies and immediately took them to the vet.

Bacelar says these cubs are starving because they had to search for food, which is evident by their protruding bones and low weight.

Adopting a pet brings changes in a home, especially in the family budget.

“These puppies are sick. They have bacteria. They are not treated well. They weren’t eating well,” Bacelar said.

But rescuing these puppies is no easy task. The cost is high for a rescue and they don’t have extra room, so they have to rely on foster families to show up.

“When you’re faced with situations like this, unfortunately, almost every day there’s been a greater influx of dogs,” Bacelar said.

The French Bulldog has been named the new favorite dog breed, according to the American Kennel Club.

Although resources are scarce, he says it is worth it.

“The best part of it all is…. making sure the dogs are fed and making sure they are happy and safe for the rest of their lives,” Bacelar said.

Because they have no room to accept more rescues, five of them go to foster care.

Nugget was found in South Carolina, almost across the country from where he disappeared.

Rescuers say they are surprised by the dogs’ sociability and they will be ready for adoption in two weeks.

As for the rest of Lancaster’s dogs, the rescue team is working closely with the man on the property, helping to provide food and resources.
