Douglas, 13, had asked for a bike for Christmas, and although his mum couldn’t get it, today Coral Gables police surprised the Honduran boy with his long-awaited wish.

Walking to school will no longer be an option for the child. The hug to the Coral Gables police consultant who came up with the idea showed appreciation for the surprise.

“I told my mum I wanted a bike but she told me she couldn’t and I told her it was okay, that when she could she would give it to me,” the boy said.

Douglas’ journey has been unique. In 2021, he came from Honduras across the border, alone, with his brother, having to leave his mother behind.

But he was able to reunite with his mother, Helen Flores, in 2022. A grateful mother proud of how quickly her son adapted to life in the United States. Today he is in seventh grade at Rockway Middle School and now his first bike in this country will of course change his daily life.

Coral Gables Police Sergeant Alejandro Escobar says:

“Help this child and give him more or less a chance so he can do things with this bike, not to destroy a bike that has been abandoned, we will give it to this child.”

The mother told us that they had applied for asylum at the border and were waiting for their hearing appointment.
