At least one person was killed and nine others, including a baby, were hospitalized after an accident that followed a police chase that ended in Long Beach on Tuesday night.
The chase began at Seal Beach and ended shortly after 8 p.m. at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway (PHC) and 2nd Street. In addition to those in the vehicle who led the chase – the driver, an adult female passenger and an infant – six other people were hospitalized, said Julia Clasby, a lieutenant with the Seal Beach Police Department (SBPD).
The chase began at approximately 7:58 p.m., when an SBPD officer stopped a vehicle in the area of PHC and 5th Street. After making contact with the driver, the officer returned to his car and drove off. realized that the woman and the passenger had swapped seats, Clasby said.
The man sped up and conducted a high-speed chase, even driving across the street. After causing the crash at PCH and 2nd Street, the driver tried to flee on foot, but officers used a Taser to shock him and place him under arrest, Clasby said.
The man and his passenger were injured and taken to hospital. The baby was taken to hospital for evaluation.
Six other people were hospitalized, while a woman in her 60s or 70s died at the scene, Clasby said.
The Seal Beach Police Department was investigating the chase while the Long Beach Police Department was investigating the accident.
