With Scars Above reviews live ahead of the space game’s official release, reviews are just as divided as they were on sci-fi game Atomic Heart, if not more.

Scars Above bills itself as a “challenging sci-fi third-person action-adventure shooter” that combines “the rewarding feeling of overcoming adversity with a captivating and intricate story”. That’s a lot to take in, isn’t it?

In short, Prime Matter’s new FPS game is an emotional shooter where you take down vicious alien creatures amidst the vines of an ever-changing and inhospitable world. While the story remains a mystery, what we do know is that you play as Dr. Kate Ward, a member of a specialist team sent to investigate a new body in orbit that appears to threaten Earth.

As the team approaches the so-called metahedron, Kate and her colleagues are transported to a mysterious alien world and must fend for themselves as hordes of fearsome creatures attempt to tear them apart.

It probably sounds like every sci-fi movie, right? There’s something quite intriguing about it though, especially since it looks like some of these monsters were likely found aboard the Ishimura in our Dead Space Remake. review.

Unfortunately, that’s where the excitement seems to end. PC reviews for the game on Metacritic are split down the middle, currently sitting at 71 (aka “mixed”). On the other hand, Atomic Heart sits at 77, which allows him to sneak into “positive” territory.

While Player 2 describes it as “AA gaming at its finest”, NME states that it is “pretty much polished”; a sentiment echoed by Everyeye.it, which states that the “bugs and levity” found throughout are due “to the youth of the development studio”.

Overall, though, the game is lauded for its innovative new ideas and fresh take on FromSoftware’s tried-and-true soulslike combat, so this might be the one to choose if you’re a lover of all things space and space. .. soulful?

Our sister site The Loadout also did a Scars Above review for PS5, so be sure to check it out if you plan on playing on console. Otherwise, we have a list of the best games like Dark Souls if Scars Above proves too easy or too difficult.
