Epic Games has shared important news related to Fortnite. Chief among them was the release of a powerful new tool designed for game content creators.

Big changes are coming to Epic Games’ hit shooter. During his more than seven-hour State of Unreal presentation at GDC 2023 (Game Developers Conference), the American developer showed off a powerful new tool designed to create additional content for Fortnite.

A big change for content creators

Announcement A while ago, the new content editor Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN for short) is finally in the hands of players.. The capabilities of the new system were presented in a brief overview.

UEFN is a powerful editor based on Unreal Engine 5. This will be a natural extension of Creative Mode for content creators in Fortnite, which has been available in the game for a long time.

Unlike the aforementioned feature, however, UEFN will be a sort of separate entity, allowing modders to interact with advanced windows and on-screen display functionality.

The new tool, admittedly more difficult to use, has much more potential than the creative mode limited to game mechanics..

Among the systems and features available in Unreal Editor for Fortnite, the developer lists:

  1. materials modeling and processing tools,
  2. Niagara system to create VFX effects,
  3. Implementation of the Verse programming language.

The video below, which is an excerpt from the State of Unreal 2023 presentation, shows the editor in action. The developers show a number of tools available in UEFN, along with their possible uses.

Without a doubt, Unreal Editor for Fortnite will mark a milestone in the development of Epic Games’ popular shooter. Although most players associate Fortnite mainly with the battle royale mode, it should be remembered that the title was only a certain framework, within which talented developers created additional content or game modes.

UEFN is now available on the Epic Games Store. The tool is free, so anyone interested in creating additional content can give it a try.

The next big changes in Fortnite

While UEFN is the biggest news in recent days related to the Epic Games title, it’s important to remember that the publisher is a part of the biggest changes that are constantly being implemented in Fortnite.

During yesterday’s conference call, a representative from the studio shared some behind-the-scenes info related to the visual update. The switch to Unreal Engine version 5.1 and the implementation of Nanite and Lumen technologies greatly influenced the appearance of Fortnite, and you can learn more about the problems and difficulties in implementing the aforementioned systems in the video below.

What will the future bring?

Although Fortnite is often a hot topic in the gaming community and certainly not a game for everyone, it’s still great to see that despite being almost 6 years old, the game is still growing. New features, whether it’s game modes (like the much-loved No-Build mode) or tools like UEFN, mean the title continues to draw in crowds of players new and old.

Fortnite is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch. The game will also be played on Android mobile devices.
