Love is scary. If you’re not into rom-coms or romance in general, you’re probably not thinking about romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day. But if you’re ready to let some cinematic romance into your life, there are plenty of romantic horror movies out there, ranging from body horror to romantic thriller. Or maybe you want to watch a good horror movie about a romance gone wrong? I don’t really like romantic movies, but this year I thought why not devote myself to it. Here is a non-exhaustive list of some suitable Valentine’s Day movies for horror lovers.

These horror movies will make you feel something on Valentine’s Day

Bones and All (2022)

Bones and It’s all a bit different from the rest of the movies I recommend today, in that I didn’t really like it the first time I saw it – but it absolutely belongs on this list. I wasn’t a big fan of the film for various reasons, but my expectations of a cannibalistic horror movie certainly had something to do with it. It’s a romantic movie rather than a horror movie.

Although I criticized the somewhat lazy allegory of the film (cannibalism as a metaphor for mental illness, or addiction, or perhaps homosexuality), are a good romantic road trip story. Young Maren (Taylor Russell) sets out on her own after being abandoned by her father, eventually crossing paths with Lee (Timothée Chalamet).

bones and all slowly winds through the country as Lee and Maren fall in love and understand what it means to be a cannibal. They do everything they can to survive and then live as “normal” lives as possible. It’s a superbly shot film, as you’d expect from Luca Guadagnino. It’s slow, wandering and with a very light plot. If you’re looking for a horror movie with a more romantic setting, “Bones and All” may be the right choice. Maren and Lee’s relationship is held together by the same kind of desperate codependency found in many teenage romances, leading to a heartbreaking end.

Sed (2009)

The thirst , by Park Chan-wook, is my least favorite movie from the Korean director’s repertoire, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good, in fact it’s brilliant. In the selfless hope of finding a cure for a deadly virus, a priest named Sang-hyun (Song Kang-ho) volunteers to be infected with the disease. Seemingly cured of the virus after a whole blood transfusion, Sang-hyun discovers he now has an insatiable thirst for blood…and sex. Sang-hyun goes through crises of identity and faith as he tries to find a way to balance his love of religion with his newfound desire.

The thirst combines the sense of humor with the grotesque. No expense was spared in the sound design, so if the licking and sucking sounds are too much for you, you might want to skip this one (also skip bones and all). Beyond that, the moral conflict is the crux of the matter; Not only does our priest face a bloodlust, but he’s also in love with his friend’s wife.

Like all of Park’s work, The thirst it is elegant, full of symbolism and mixes genres with mastery. Yeah The thirst makes me want to watch more Park Chan-wook movies, I have to recommend The servant. More thriller than horror, The servant tells a story of romance and betrayal; Also, as with all Park movies, it’s best to know as few plot details as possible.

titane

Titanium (2021)

Titanium It was one of my favorite movies of 2021, and it might just make it to my list of the best movies of the decade. Titanium, which tackles ideas about sexuality and gender identity, doesn’t come across as a romantic movie, but at its core, it’s a really sweet story. Julia Ducournau’s film about a serial killer is incredibly realized, visceral and spectacular. The intentionality of each shot and the performances are mesmerizing: you can wince or wince, but you can’t look away.

Titanium It’s one of the weirdest movies to hit the mainstream in recent years. (There is the obvious sexuality of the plot itself: the protagonist, Adrien/Alexia (Agathe Rousselle), becomes pregnant by a car. Adrien/Alexia is traumatized, as well as embarrassed and confused by her sexual desires, but she also wants a family and wants Adrien/Alexa to form an unexpected bond with Vincent (Vincent Lindon), a firefighter struggling with his own body image and acceptance issues.

The heart of Titanium it’s about finding a family and accepting each other no matter how much they made us feel who and who we are, and that’s where the romance lies. Vincent and Adrien/Alexia are both despised and do not accept each other, but can accept each other. Titanium It’s Julia Ducournau’s love letter to monsters and anyone who’s ever felt uncomfortable in their own bodies, and it’s awesome. Be careful, don’t cower and expect it to be “Netflix and chill”.

Deputy (2022)

This Shudder original about owning a dybbuk hit the streaming service on February 9, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Two women, a British student and a former Danish actress who now pays the bills by dressing up as an elf princess for children, meet in a library and quickly fall in love. Despite their differences in age and culture, Leah (Ellie Kendrick) and Maja (Josephine Park) are inseparable. It’s everything you expect from romantic comedies: the meeting, the preparations and the preparation of breakfast. You can easily forget you’re watching a scary movie, until Leah suddenly falls ill.

When Leah’s condition begins to worsen, Maja decides to move with her to North London, where Leah lives with her mother Chana (Sofie Gråbøl). Chana is not only domineering and clingy, but also superstitious and reserved. Maja, unaware of the Jewish culture she is suddenly immersed in, attempts to learn more about Chana’s superstitions and the mysticism surrounding her. The film takes a dark turn as Leah gets worse, but writer-director Gabriel Bier Gislason maintains a tight pacing and a fluid blend of comedy and romance in his feature debut.

I usually find it hard to believe in possession movies, but Ellie Kendrick’s performance as Leah makes this story grounded. It’s refreshing to see a subversion of the usual Catholic exorcism scenes we’re all used to, if only for a different take on the subject. And you know what? East are a very comfortable rom-com horror film.

Primavera (2014)

As Attachmentthe principle of Spring It doesn’t differ much from that of a typical romantic film. After the loss of his mother, American Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci) travels to Italy to clear his mind. After partying with Brits and starting to work on a farm, Evan meets Louise (Nadia Hilker). The two flirt; Louise initially rejects Evan, but they end up having sex. Although the relationship should end there, Evan still doesn’t know that Louise is hiding a dangerous secret.

Spring it evolves from this brief romance to body horror as we learn more about Louise’s “condition”. If you’re new to the works of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, both filmmakers are masters of contemporary cosmic horror, and this mysterious tale is surreal, atmospheric, and unique.

Many of these romantic horror movies take ideas from classic horror and monster movies and instead create stories about accepting and loving who you are. If you’re looking for something less healthy, this last one on the list will be perfect.

geralds game

Gerald’s Game (2017)

A romantic getaway spirals out of control in this adaptation of Stephen King’s book of the same name. Directed by Mike Flanagan and starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood as Jessie and Gerald, by Gerald The game is one of the best Netflix Originals in recent memory, as well as a tense and fast-paced run.

Gerald and Jessie head to a secluded lakeside home for what should be a romantic getaway; They hope to spice things up a bit and rekindle the warmth of their marriage. Gerald has fantasies that Jessie isn’t entirely comfortable with, which involve handcuffing her to the bed. And then Gerald dies of a heart attack. It’s a nightmare scenario in which Jessie struggles with hallucinations and memories, trying to find a way out of her situation. As Jessie battles her inner demons, she tries to prove to herself that she’s worth saving. Gerald’s game It’s not romantic in the traditional sense, but Jessie’s relationship with herself is amazing to watch throughout this situation. Hands down the scariest movie on this list, it’s not for the faint of heart.

Whether you want to impress your new partner with your ability to handle horror movies or just fancy a little romance you won’t find on the Hallmark Channel, this list of Valentine’s Day movies should do the trick. . I’m sure there are more, but these are some of my favorites from the last decade. All a little weird, some a little (or a lot) disgusting. Like romances in real life.
