With an episode title like “Endure and Survive”, episode 5 of season 1 of The last of us just looking for trouble. In addition to diving into the situation of brothers Henry and Sam, this episode features an incredible climax. Let’s analyze the main differences between episode 5 of the HBO series The Last of Us and the video game.
Among the main differences between episode 5 of The Last of Us series and the video game, a scene from the video game stands out.
This time there are several differences between episode 5, “Endure and Survive”, and the game, even though Henry and Sam’s fates are the same as in The Last of Us Part I. Here are the changes:
- We learn more about Kathleen, who besides being the current rebel leader was also primarily responsible for Phaedra’s downfall. In the game, the rebel hunter/leader remains hidden.
- We also see a large number of people celebrating Phaedra’s passing; in the game, we only see the hunters.
- Sam is deaf and also suffers from leukemia. This is also not the case in the game.
- Henry explains that he turned in Kathleen’s brother to get Sam’s leukemia medicine. In the game, hunters were killing their party, with no particular motivation (other than survival).
- Henry saw Joel and Ellie being chased by the rebels. It’s never mentioned in the game.
- Rather than just running into Joel and Ellie, Henry and Sam actively search for the pair, offering them a way out of town if they help them escape.
- Joel, Ellie, Henry and Sam go into hiding. But, unlike the game, they encounter no infected. Phèdre is said to have emptied the tunnels.
- Joel gets a sniper rifle, but offers the sniper, an older man, a chance to surrender. He goes to get his gun and Joel shoots him. In the game, the hunter with the rifle jumps on Joel as he enters the room and attempts to stab him.
- Instead of shooting the rebels/hunters to death like in the game, Ellie, Sam and Henry get run over by the hunters.
- Henry tries to give up, which he doesn’t in the game.
- The infected appear, as in The Last of Us Part I. But they also attack the rebels, whereas in the game they only arrive when they are dead. Besides the chapter Left Behind/DLCInfected and human enemies never interact in the first game.
- There’s an absolutely massive horde of Infected, compared to the handful of enemies that spawn in the game. Additionally, in-game enemies rush in, while the show’s Infected come out of the basement.
- Among the horde is a bloat. In the game, you experience no bloat while Henry and Sam are with you.
- One of the clickers is a boy. In the game, all clickers are adults. In fact, aside from Sam, all of the “normal” infected are also adults.
- In the game, Joel defeats the infected. Among the marked differences between episode 5 and The last of us the game, in the series, the four flee, leaving the horde very active.
- Sam shows Ellie that he is infected. In the game, his dialogue involves him, but it is never shown to him.
- Ellie tries to use her blood to fight off the infection, dabbing it on the bite. This does not happen in the game. It does not work.
- She tries to stay awake for Sam, but falls asleep. In the game, she sleeps because she ignores the bite mark.
- Joel and Ellie bury Sam and Henry. We don’t see that in the game.
So what about Kansas City?
“Endure and Survive” ends with Joel and Ellie continuing their journey, even though we want to know what happened to Kansas City. In the game, we didn’t really care because we couldn’t see the rest of the inhabitants of the quarantine zone.

But thanks to all the context the show has given us, we’re much more curious. We’ve already seen the ground move under the city, so we have a horrible feeling that the horde will break through there as well. Kathleen has probably taken the best and most trained adults in town with her, so now that she and her forces are gone, there will be no one left to protect the town.
Things may not end well for the survivors of Kansas City, but since Ellie and Joel are gone, we won’t know. Well, unless we get this spinoff from Tales of the Last of We are waiting for so long.
