Mexico frees and later re-arrests the drug trafficker ‘El Güero’ Palma, founder of the Sinaloa Cartel

After the release of ‘El Güero’ Palma of the prison AltiplanoIn the central State of Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador revealed that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) requested the arraigo of the drug trafficker, who was acquitted on Saturday by a federal judge.

“Apparently the Prosecutor’s Office found an unclear complaint and asked the Judiciary for a time to settle for the whole matter to be aired, it also gives time for authorities from other countries to report if there are no extradition processes”, reported at his morning press conference.

The release of the capo has been controversial since Saturday, when, in the middle of the Labor Day holiday, the Second District Court of Federal Criminal Proceedings in Jalisco, a western Mexican state, acquitted Palma of the crime of organized crime.

The man, who was first imprisoned in Mexico in 1995, then in the United States from 2007 to 2016, and until now he was an inmate of the Altiplano prison, he is known as one of the founders of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Therefore, the president questioned the judge’s decision and ordered his Government to obtain a period of 48 hours, which expired on Tuesday, for the FGR, the Ministry of Security and the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) to collect if there are more complaints or extradition processes.

“(That) all authorities can report if there are no pending investigation files,” López Obrador reiterated this Tuesday.

The president clarified that the case “is already in the hands of the Attorney General’s Office,” although he did not detail the conditions of the arrest of the capo, who is allegedly in Mexico City.

Despite questioning the judge who acquitted the drug trafficker, the president affirmed that he will respect his release, if he does not find anything incriminating within the requested period.

“If that time passes and there is no pending accusation, then it would proceed, because this is a mandate of law, to grant him freedom, but if there is, if there is something pending, freedom could not be granted,” he concluded.
