After the approval of some reforms of the Penal Code, this March 3 the measures were published by the CDMX Official Journal, where are indicated the penalties for anyone who mistreats animals.

On February 6, the Mexico Congress With 51 votes for, two against and zero abstentions, the sentence of up to ten years in prison for mistreating a living being was approved.

The reforms were approved for application to the CDMX Penal Code, Animal Welfare Law, and Mexico City Civic Culture Law to discourage and end abandonment, mutilation for aesthetic reasonsabuse, cruelty, poisoningthe abduction and consumption of pets, in addition to punishing the operation of clandestine slaughterhouses, the use of animals for sexual purposes and the consumption of sentient beings not intended for supply.

In this way, the modifications favor feathers ranging from five months to one year in prison against people who abandon an animal in the street six years for those who commit acts of abuse, violence and cruelty to animals. and finally until ten years in prison for mistreatment that ends in the death of the animal.

Animal abuse in Mexico City

The Citizen Council for Security and Justice in Mexico City reported that more than 17 thousand 600 reports for animal abuseof which the 87% are related to dogs.
