Peruvian police over the weekend seized a pre-Hispanic mummy from the backpack of a delivery man who had had it in his home for some three decades, according to an official statement and a video that has gone viral on social media. (AFP)

Through an official statement and a video, the Peruvian police announced that the seizure was made last weekend of Julio César Bermejo, 26, when he was with friends in the park from the city.

“I take care of her, I nurture her, she’s like my spiritual girlfriend”said the delivery boy about the mummy whom he called “Juanita” and that, in his words, he has been in his home for over 30 years since his father found the remains. According to him, his father took him from a policeman for money he had lent him and then “he got attached to it”.

After being surprised by the police, Bermejo assured that he was not trying to sell the mummy and explained that he carried it in his backpack to show it to his friends andThen donate it to a local museum.

For his part, he Ministry of Culture immediately ordered the custody of the mummified remains to protect and preserve the heritage while the prosecution carries out the relevant investigations.
