Two people whom the authorities consider suspected of participating in the shooting at the Xcaret hotel near Playa del Carmen, in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, were captured, the Quintana Roo Prosecutor’s Office reported in a statement on Tuesday.

The shooting occurred on January 21 and resulted in the death of two of the three Canadian tourists attacked in the incident.

The Public Ministry identifies the detainees only as Christian “R” and Nhu “T”, without providing more details about their last names.

According to the statement from the Prosecutor’s Office, the joint investigations with the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico and the Canadian authorities indicate that the people killed in this incident were allegedly involved in transnational illicit activities, which would have led to a fight that led to the shooting
