The Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has held different virtual meetings with Mexican and Canadian authorities this Friday and has opted for cooperation and “joint work” with both countries to address shared challenges and matters such as the fight against COVID-19, the economy, migration or energy goals.

Specific, Blinken has spoken this Friday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, with whom he has addressed the “continuous” cooperation on migration issues, including the elimination of the Migrant Protection Protocols, as specified by the State Department spokesman, Ned Price.

They have also discussed the “shared efforts” to address the challenges of COVID-19 in individual countries and have reaffirmed their “strong partnership” and “dedication” to “work to improve security and economic prosperity of peoples.”

Specifically, Blinken has emphasized the need for Mexico and the United States to work together on issues such as climate change and to discuss energy goals.

This Friday the Secretary of State also spoke with the Mexican Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, with whom he analyzed the implementation of the Agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada and the “continuous efforts” to modernize and strengthen the economies of the countries. and regional economic integration, Price has also detailed.

At the meeting, Clouthier highlighted the commercial relations between both territories and expressed Mexico’s willingness to be part of the “efforts” of the United States to guarantee the supply of products in the country’s chains.

“We want to be suppliers of these goods”, has asserted the Mexican Secretary of Economy.

Hours after these appointments, the White House has announced that the President of the United States, Joe Biden, will meet virtually with his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on March 1 to also discuss cooperation on migration, the pandemic and joint development efforts in southern Mexico and Central America, among others.

COLLABORATION WITH CANADA

On the other hand, the head of the State Department has also held a videoconference with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, in which both leaders have pledged to collaborate to combat COVID-19.

They have also discussed energy initiatives, employment, and consumer protection “for the benefit of the economies and peoples of Canada and the United States,” Price added.

In the contact round with Canada, Blinken also spoke with the Foreign Minister, Marc Garneau, in a meeting in which he reiterated, once again, the opportunity to work in “close collaboration” with the aim of addressing the priorities shared between both territories and marked in the roadmap of your association.

In their conversation, both authorities have deepened their cooperation to “promote democracy and protect Human Rights throughout the hemisphere and throughout the world.”
