Authorities and activists identified this Sunday as a Salvadoran migrant the woman suffocated to death with the knee of a Mexican policeman from the tourist municipality of Tulum, in the southeast of Mexico, amid international complaints and reports of racism.

Feminist and migrant associations recognized as Victoria Esperanza Salazar, 36 years old, to the woman who appears in a video in which one of the four agents of the Municipal Public Security Directorate of Tulum present in the place suffocates her.

After the identification of the victim, activists viralized the hashtag #JusticiaParaVictoria, a movement that was joined by Mexican politics.

I join the demand for justice and zero impunity for the murder of Victoria, a woman who lost her life at the hands of the municipal police of Tulum, Quintana Roo. I condemn this act of excessive use of force. Let him be punished ”, wrote Malú Micher, president of the Gender Equity Commission of the Mexican Senate.

The death of Victoria, that the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Quintana Roo investigated as aggravated homicide, causing outrage after the video was released this Sunday, recorded on Saturday, in which one of the four policemen from Tulum that can be seen places his knee on the neck of the victim, who only manages to moan.

After his identity was revealed, the scandal sparked complaints from migrant associations and politicians in El Salvador.

”The police of Tulum in Mexico, in a visible excessive use of force (4 against 1), has left the Salvadoran Victoria Salazar lifeless. Let us ask that the authorities of our country demand #JusticiaParaVictoria ”, denounced Claudia Ortiz, a deputy elected by San Salvador.

Although the FGE of Quintana Roo investigates three male police officers and a woman, and the mayor of TulumVíctor Mas Tah, announced that he will separate them from the position, they have not clarified if they are detained or why they subjected the victim.

Activists have compared what happened to the murder of African-American George Floyd, who died of suffocation by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in May 2020, sparking the historic protests for racial justice in the United States.

”The levels of racism and misogyny are overflowing. The most serious thing is when the State promotes it and does not try to eradicate it. First it was George Floyd, now it is our compatriot, Victoria Salazar “Daniela Genovez, vice president of the American Association of Jurists, El Salvador branch, tweeted.

The case touches on two current crises in Mexico, that of sexist violence reflected in the murder of more than 10 women a day, according to UN Women, and the immigration crisis, as shown by the detention of 34,993 irregular migrants until March 25, with a 28% annual increase. The head of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), Olga Sánchez Cordero, joined the demand for justice. ”

I condemn and demand justice for the unfortunate events that occurred in Quintana Roo this weekend. Acts like these should not go unpunished ”, he declared.
