MEXICO CITY, April 10  – The death toll from COVID-19 in Mexico soared on Saturday with 2,192 new deaths, for a total of 209,212 fatalities, according to data released by health authorities.

It was not immediately clear if the figure, which far exceeds recent daily totals, was due to changes made by the government in the way it collects its data, as happened in October, when it reported 2,789 deaths in a single day.

In addition, coronavirus cases totaled 2,278,420, which represents 6,356 more than the day before, while the rate of vaccination against the disease in the country accelerates and fears persist for a third wave of infections after the Easter holidays.

The Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, said on Friday night that considering the incubation periods of between five and seven days, on Monday the first indicators of the increase in infections of the disease caused by the coronavirus could be observed.
