The Government of Mexico reported this Wednesday that the first asylum applications of Afghan citizens have already been processed, especially those of women and girls, after the Taliban finally took control of Afghanistan with their arrival in Kabul.

The procedures are being carried out through the Mexican Embassy in Tehran, the capital of Iran, explained the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard.

“I inform you that with the active participation of Guillermo Puente Ordorica, Mexican ambassador to Iran, we have begun processing the first refugee applications of Afghan citizens, especially women and girls who have requested it,” said the minister on twitter.

In recent days thousands of people have been struggling to leave Afghanistan due to the arrival of the Taliban in the Afghan capital. The international coalition has taken control of the airport in order to remove its citizens and diplomatic personnel, while hundreds of Afghans who collaborated with foreign troops also wait to be evacuated.
