Eleven killed in a shooting in clandestine horse race in Mexico

Eleven people died in a shooting unleashed on Sunday at a clandestine horse race held in Chihuahua, north of Mexicothe regional government reported on Monday.

“Until now we have the report of unfortunately 11 people who lost their lives”five of them in the place and the rest in the transfer to hospitals, said the secretary of regional Public Security, Gilberto Loya.

“The shooting” registered in El Sauz, in the municipality of Chihuahua was the product of “a confrontation between two groups (criminals)” rivals, the official added.

The place used for clandestine races was deserted and this Monday only elements used by the rescue forces to help the injured were seen, the local press reported.

Chihuahua bordering the United States, has been one of the states hardest hit by the wave of criminal violence that has shaken Mexico for fifteen years because it is part of the drug transfer route.

Nine people were murdered in the municipality of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua last February in two attacks launched during the funeral of a man who had been murdered days before.

During the first three months of 2022, a total of 411 people have been killed in the state of Chihuahua, according to government data.

Since 2006 when a militarized anti-drug strategy was deployed, the violence that has left some 340,000 muertos -mostly attributed to actions of organized crime.
