At least five people were injured after a fire on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, state oil company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) reported on Sunday.

Pemex said in a message on Twitter that the fire was controlled around 4:30 pm (local time) on the platform, located in the Campeche Sound.

In another message, the oil company said that the injured suffered burns and that they were transferred to different hospitals in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche. No details were given on the severity of his injuries.

Until this Sunday, it was unknown how the fire started or the extent of the damage.

“An investigation of the root cause will be carried out to determine the origin of this fact,” added Pemex.

An additional request for information sent by Citizen Free Press to the state company was not immediately answered on Sunday.
