The attacker’s motives were not immediately clear, but Valérie Pécresse, president of the Ile-de-France region, where Rambouillet is located, told Citizen Free Press affiliate BFM TV that terrorism “cannot be ruled out.”

The counterterrorism prosecutor’s office, which generally handles terrorist attack investigations, has opened an investigation into the incident, a spokesperson told Citizen Free Press on Friday.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex shared his condolences with the victim’s family and said, in a Tweet, which “have the support of the entire nation.”

“The Republic has just lost one of its heroines, in an infinitely cowardly gesture of barbarism,” he added.

Drmanin and Castex headed to the city of the events, which has about 25,000 inhabitants and is about 60 kilometers southwest of Paris.
