A senior US intelligence official says Belarus plans to send troops to Ukraine possibly as early as Monday to fight alongside Russian forces that invaded Ukrainian territory last week.

Belarus has provided support to Russia’s war effort but to date has not been directly involved in the conflict.

The US official briefed on current intelligence assessments says the Belarusian government’s decision to enter the war depends on talks between Russia and Ukraine in the coming days.

The official requested anonymity to comment on sensitive information.

Russian forces have faced stiff resistance from Ukraine’s defenders and US officials say the invasion has been more difficult and slower than the Kremlin thought, though that could change as Moscow adjusts to the situation.
