A young businessman identified as Brian Cordovadenounced that a BBVA Continental business advisor had defrauded him and his family out of more than 700,000 soles in banking transactions after the agency employee offered to invest in a mutual fund campaign that would presumably give good financial performance.

Talk to MTB Newsthe victim said it all dates back to July 2021 when Sophie Ruiz, the bank employee, offered him a pooling campaign, and the young man accepted because there was a friendly relationship. It even included family money, but it was the start of a series of irregularities.

“Since there was the issue of trust and she had been my advisor for two years, she offered me a campaign that was going to give me a good return. It was 10% that he could earn monthly with an amount that he could deposit and withdraw later with no problem,” he told the aforementioned newscast.

Cordoba deposited the money in the account Ruiz because she claimed that this account was controlled and guaranteed by the bank. When the person concerned wanted to know how the profits of the mutual funds were doing, the BBVA Continental employee stopped responding to messages and limited herself to sending her company emails, informing her of the dates disbursements that never took place.

“He sends me emails from bank officials saying there will be a disbursement on that date. She abused my good faith but I kept waiting. Until he sent me an e-mail telling me that he had a problem within the bank, that he was being investigated by fraud. In April, he texted me saying he didn’t have the money, he was in the bank, he had lost everything,” he said.

In April 2022, Cordoba and his family went to BBVA Continental to report the alleged fraud, however, the bank manager informed them that the worker had quit. The complainant indicated that the adviser had made transactions for more than 100,000 soles – 700,000 soles with her family’s money – without the bank having informed her of this affair. The woman is currently missing.

He BBVA Continental, through a statement, said that the prosecution’s investigation determined that this matter was part of negotiations between private parties and, therefore, filed a complaint. This means that the bank is not responsible because the adviser does not work for the bank branch.

indecopi, for its part, is starting an administrative procedure against BBVA. However, the bank replied “that it will attach the corresponding evidence demonstrating that it did not participate in the facts and will respect the final decisions that will be made”.

In 2022, new forms of fraud were identified as digital fraud (phishing, smishing, and pharming), door-to-door card collection, and calls from fake managers.

Due to these issues, it has been suggested to the general public to protect their personal details and avoid offering them to third parties or strangers.
