Rumor has it that Apple will release a new iPad and MacBook model with an OLED display in 2022.

The source of rumors is DigiTimes, an electronic components industry information magazine that is familiar with Taiwan’s supply chain information. At the time of writing, no further details were revealed.

The 2015 Apple Watch is the first time Apple has adopted an OLED display. Starting with iPhone X two years later, it gradually expanded to be adopted in iPhone, and all models in the 2020 iPhone 12 series are equipped with organic EL.

Organic EL panels boast several advantages over LCDs, such as high brightness, black expressiveness, improved contrast, and a wide viewing angle.

However, Macs and iPads continue to use LCD displays, presumably because of the high cost of large organic panels.

Therefore, the development of a mini LED-backlit display (a technology that replaces the latter with a minute LED while maintaining the structure of the liquid crystal + backlight LED) is underway, and the new iPad Pro and the next MacBook Pro equipped with it are being developed. It is expected that it will be released within the year.

On the other hand, there were some rumors that Apple was preparing an iPad with OLED. First, at the end of 2020, Korean media The Elec reported that “the first iPad Pro equipped with a mini LED in the first half of 2021 and the organic EL model will appear in the second half.”

After that, an analyst at Barclays, a British investment bank, affirmed the prospect of launch, based on Asian supply chain sources, saying that “it is unlikely that it will be released until 2022 at the earliest.”

If the iPad Pro with mini LED and MacBook Pro are to be released within 2021, the next year’s introduction of the organic EL model will “switch the display technology twice in a short period of time”, and the supply chain and consumers It’s unlikely because it can be confusing.

However, the coexistence of different display technologies is also preceded by the 2018-2019 flagship iPhone (iPhone 11 is LCD, 11 Pro is organic EL, etc.). For example, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro may have a mini LED screen, and the 11-inch model may have an organic EL screen.

Depending on the price range, the adoption panel may be changed to differentiate the product.
