The start of the match between Nice and Cologne on Thursday in the Conference League was delayed due to brawls between fans in the stands of the Allianz Riviera stadium.

UEFA reported that kick-off was delayed 55 minutes to 7:40 p.m. local time due to crowd disturbances.

Television footage showed fans brawling before kick-off at Nice’s home.

With the teams in their dressing rooms, Cologne captain Jonas Hector came out and urged fans to remain peaceful, according to Cologne’s English-language Twitter account.

“We can’t wait to play this game with you. We all want the game to take place. But we also have to say that what happened is not good. We don’t want to see that,” Héctor said.

French media reported that at least two people were seriously injured.

The match started after a delay of almost an hour. Warnings were issued that any further incidents will cause the match to be suspended.

“Hopefully we can focus on football for the next 90 minutes and talk on the pitch,” Colonia tweeted as the game started.
