Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made an announcement via his Instagram account. In a video, he revealed the official launch of Threads, the new social network developed with the aim of replacing Twitter, he said in his official account:

“All right, hello everyone! We have great news today. We’re launching Threads, an open and friendly public space for conversations. It takes the best parts of the Instagram experience and creates a new app focused on texting ideas and sharing what you think,” Zuckerberg said in the recording.
This announcement represents a significant achievement in Meta’s strategy to expand its influence in the social networking arena, while providing users with an exciting and innovative alternative for connecting and sharing content online.

In addition, the company’s president explained the requirements needed to register on the platform and begin exploring the various tools it offers. This information is key for those interested in joining and making the most of the Threads experience.

“You just sign up with your Instagram account. Your followers are already there and you can get started right away. It’s available on the App Store. So far, the feedback from people who have tried it has been really positive and I’m looking forward to the fun journey ahead to turn this into the great, friendly community we all want to see in the world. Great stuff, hope to see you all there at Threads!” he added in his communication.

By using an Instagram account to log in, users will have the ability to make posts on Threads with a 500-character limit. In addition, they will be able to enrich their posts by including links, photos and videos up to five minutes long.

The tool is designed to be compatible with ActivityPub, an open social networking protocol established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This integration will allow it to be interoperable with other applications such as Mastodon and WordPress.

The vision of the application is to allow users of compatible applications to follow and interact with others, without needing to have an account on the application itself, and vice versa.

This will encourage interconnection and diversity in social networks, expanding the possibilities of connection between different platforms. In case of having a public profile, users will be able to approve those followers who wish to interact with their content, following an experience similar to that found on Instagram.

Threads had its first appearance in 2019

The platform was presented to the world for the second time, as between 2019 and 2021, Facebook activated it, although with different functions.

In the first attempt, the aim was to separate the functions of content creation (photos, videos, reels, sending comments) from those dedicated purely to the private messaging of the application. Therefore, the dynamic between Threads and Instagram was intended to mimic the same dynamic that currently exists between Messenger and Facebook.

While Messenger focused more on texts, Threads was very similar to Snapchat, as it prioritized the device’s camera functions.

The difference in this regard (and one of the reasons it had little success) was that users could only send messages and post statuses so that only those accounts marked as “Best Friends” could see the content.

It wasn’t until 2020 when users increased due to the messaging feature being enabled to write to anyone and not just best friends.

Then, in 2021, it announced that Instagram’s messaging platform would close and messaging capabilities would revert back to being unified in the main app.
