The Catalan designer Antonio Miró , a benchmark in Spanish fashion, has died at the age of 74, after several decades of career in which he took his creations from Barcelona to the main international catwalks. “May the earth be light to him,” wrote the Spanish Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta, on his personal Twitter account when the news broke.

Miró -born in 1947 in Sabadell, near Barcelona- died as a result of a heart attack , according to several local media reports.
The son of a tailor , the innovative Catalan creator opened his first store in Barcelona at the end of the 1960s, when he was barely 20 years old. His original designs soon differed from the usual fashion of the time and in 1976 he managed to create his own brand , with which he would later parade on catwalks such as Paris, New York or Tokyo.
Closely linked to the image of Barcelona, and with marked Mediterranean influences in his designs, Antonio Miró was responsible for creating the uniforms for the ceremonies of the Barcelona’92 Olympic Games , one of the company’s milestones. He also designed garments for the regional police and for other large companies.

“Saddened by the death of Toni Miró, one of the great references of Catalan fashion,” the president of the Catalan regional government, Pere Aragonès , wrote on Twitter in his message of condolences.
