A new episode in the rich Balkany business soap opera. Patrick Balkany, who made a request for sentence adjustment following his incarceration at Fleury-Merogis, will appear on June 30 before the sentencing chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal, indicated to the AFP the general prosecutor’s office.

Still opposed to his conviction

On May 30, the Evry prosecutor’s office appealed the conditional release, without an electronic bracelet, of the 73-year-old former mayor LR of Levallois-Perret, decided by the Evry sentence enforcement court. He therefore remains imprisoned in Fleury-Merogis until the decision of the Paris Court of Appeal, which will certainly be deliberated.

The prosecution considered that the former mayor of Levallois-Perret “always expressed his opposition to the principle of his conviction, despite its final nature, which does not bode well for compliance with the requested sentence adjustment measure”.

“The prosecution would never have appealed against another detainee, it is a judicial harassment against Patrick Balkany, against any form of logic, reason and law”, had commented his lawyers, Mes Robin Binsard and Romain Dieudonné.

At the end of the hearing on June 30, the courts will decide on his conditional release, his placement under an electronic bracelet or his continued detention.

Judicial soap opera

After having carried out five months of detention for tax evasion, then was released under electronic bracelet for health reasons, the former elected returned to prison because of numerous breaches of his obligations, according to justice.

The placement under electronic bracelet of his wife Isabelle was also revoked. She left the hospital last Saturday and is in “convalescence” at her home in Giverny, in the Eure, pending a possible summons to court.

The Balkany spouses had been found guilty of not having paid wealth tax between 2010 and 2015 and of having paid a grossly undervalued income tax between 2009 and 2014, for an estimated total of four million euros. euros of sums evaded.

The end of Patrick Balkany’s sentence is set for April 21, 2023. Since February, he has served half of his sentence and will have served two-thirds of his sentence from July 3.
